Penn State Faces Minnesota Duluth in NCAA D1 Playoffs on TSN

Gavin McKenna and the Penn State Nittany Lions are set to begin their pursuit of a national championship. They will play against the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs in the NCAA Division I men’s tournament. This Round of 16 matchup is scheduled for Friday night at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT and will be broadcast live on TSN2, TSN.ca, and the TSN App.

Penn State’s Journey to the Tournament

McKenna, a standout player from Whitehorse, Yukon, has been a prominent figure in this year’s NCAA season. Recently, he maintained his position as the top prospect in TSN’s March draft rankings. Initially, he faced challenges during the early part of his Big 10 career. However, his performance significantly improved after representing Team Canada in the World Juniors.

During the final 18 games of the season, McKenna’s output soared. He doubled his goal count and averaged nearly two points per game, concluding his freshman year with 15 goals and a total of 51 points. His efforts earned him the Big 10 scoring title and the conference player’s award, solidifying his status as a Hobey Baker Award candidate.

Coaches’ Praise and Future Prospects

Craig Button, TSN’s Director of Scouting, commended McKenna’s development. He noted that McKenna’s success in the latter part of the season was built on the foundational experiences he gained earlier. “He was looking for the best development path,” Button remarked, highlighting the adjustments McKenna faced as a student-athlete navigating new challenges.

Looking Ahead: Potential Sweet Sixteen Showdown

As Penn State aims for its second Frozen Four appearance in history, they reflect on their previous tournament experiences. The Nittany Lions have qualified for the NCAA national tournament three times in four years but have made it to the Frozen Four only once, last season, where they were eliminated by Boston University in the semifinals.

On the other hand, Minnesota Duluth returns to the Division I playoffs for the first time since 2022. The Bulldogs aim to revive their program’s success, having claimed back-to-back national titles in 2018 and 2019. Led by Max Plante, a Detroit Red Wings prospect and fellow Hobey Baker candidate, Minnesota Duluth looks to make a strong impact in this year’s tournament.
