Romania Redirects €2.8 Billion in EU Funds: Key Allocation Priorities

Romania has announced the reallocation of over €2.8 billion in European Union funds to support four key priorities during the 2021-2027 cohesion policy review. This decision was highlighted by Roxana Mînzatu, the Vice-President of the European Commission.
Key Allocation Priorities
The allocated funds will focus on four major areas:
- Competitiveness and Strategic Technologies: €1.53 billion
- Defense and Crisis Preparedness: €904 million
- Housing: €208 million
- Water Infrastructure: €200 million
A significant portion of this reallocation, approximately €456 million, is supported by the European Social Fund Plus, managed at the EU level.
Strategic Uses of Funds
The funds will serve multiple strategic objectives:
- Investment in digitalization, health, and industry for economic transition.
- Training in emerging fields, such as digital technologies and cybersecurity.
- Infrastructure development for military mobility and defense capacity.
- Enhancement of essential water supply systems for communities.
- Development of social housing projects to increase access to affordable living.
Romania’s allocation of €2.837 billion places it among the top five EU members committing substantial resources for strategic European needs. Other top contributors include:
