National League Legend Supports Starmer, Stelling on Additional EFL Promotion Spot

National League Legend Ian Henderson Supports Additional Promotion Spot
Ian Henderson, a prominent figure in Rochdale football, has expressed his support for an additional promotion spot in the National League. The current system allows only two teams to ascend to League Two each season—namely, the champions and the play-off winners. However, the ongoing ‘3UP’ campaign aims to change this by advocating for a third promotion spot.
Support from Key Figures
Back in February 2025, a significant call for change was made by the 72 teams across the National League and its feeder divisions. This proposal has received backing from Prime Minister Keir Starmer and over 60 Members of Parliament. Moreover, Jeff Stelling, a former Sky Sports presenter and honorary president of Hartlepool, has taken up an ambassadorial role with the National League.
Current Promotion Landscape
Despite the lobbying efforts, the English Football League (EFL) has yet to endorse the proposed changes. As it stands, the promotion system remains at two teams up and two teams down, maintaining a traditional approach to league structure. Henderson believes that adding a third promotion slot would elevate the competition, arguing that it would make the league “more complete” and “competitive.”

Henderson’s Perspective
At 41, Henderson remains active in the National League and is keenly aware of the competitive atmosphere. He noted how intense the current title race is, with his team, Rochdale, and York City vying for the top position. Both teams could potentially exceed 100 points this season, yet only one may secure automatic promotion.
This season has been remarkable for Rochdale, with 30 wins and 4 draws in 39 matches, leading to a total of 94 points. Henderson emphasized the dedication required to maintain performance, stating that each match holds significant weight in the league race.
Upcoming Challenges
Rochdale’s next challenge will be against Scunthorpe United, who are also in the promotion hunt. A win in this match would bring them closer to returning to League Two after a three-year absence. Henderson recognizes the strength of their opponents and is focused on delivering a strong performance.
With his extensive experience, including winning promotions with Norwich City and Rochdale, Henderson is eager to add another accolade to his career. He remains committed to focusing on the current season, ensuring that the team prepares adequately for the critical matches ahead.
