Flames Attract Interest in Whitecloud and Coleman Amid Deadline Approaching

The Calgary Flames are at the center of trade discussions as the NHL deadline approaches. With only 24 hours remaining, interest has surged around defenceman Zach Whitecloud and forward Blake Coleman.
Interest in Zach Whitecloud
According to TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger, Zach Whitecloud is a highly sought-after player. Reports indicate that over 15 teams are considering a trade for him. However, the Flames management may be reluctant to part with the 29-year-old defenceman. He is viewed as a critical part of the team’s defensive lineup.
- Whitecloud is signed for two more seasons on a six-year, $16.5 million deal.
- His cap hit stands at $2.75 million.
- This season, he has recorded two goals and 11 points in 59 games.
- Whitecloud was acquired from the Vegas Golden Knights last month.
Blake Coleman’s Situation
The Flames are also receiving attention for forward Blake Coleman. While there is considerable interest, the offers they have received thus far have not met their expectations. Dreger notes that it is slightly more likely Coleman will remain with Calgary as they weigh their options.
- At 34 years old, Coleman has 13 goals and 22 points this season.
- This is his fifth season with the Flames, following a six-year contract signed in July 2021.
- He is contracted through next season at an annual salary of $4.9 million.
Recent Trades and Team Status
The Flames made headlines on Wednesday by trading defenceman MacKenzie Weegar to the Utah Mammoth. In return, they received three second-round picks for 2026, along with prospect Jonathan Castagna and defenceman Olli Maata.
As of now, Calgary is struggling in their division, sitting second-last in the Pacific Division with a record of 24-29-7. They are currently 12 points behind the final playoff position.
With the NHL trade deadline looming, the Flames are carefully considering their options regarding both Whitecloud and Coleman. The coming hours will be crucial for the organization as they seek to navigate trade possibilities and improve their standing in the league.
