Schumaker Hires Two Former Rangers for His Staff

Texas Rangers’ manager Skip Schumaker has added two former Rangers to his coaching staff for the upcoming 2026 season. Rod Barajas and Travis Jankowski will join the team in new roles, enhancing the organization’s talent pool.

New Coaching Staff Announced

The Rangers revealed a total of 10 coaching staff members on November 12, 2025. This includes a mix of returning coaches and newcomers, with more announcements expected in the future.

Returning Coaches

  • Bench coach: Luis Urueta
  • Assistant pitching coach: Dave Bush
  • Quality control coach: Brett Hayes (now catching coach)
  • Third-base coach: Corey Ragsdale (formerly first-base coach)

New Additions

  • Quality control coach: Rod Barajas (former catcher and first baseman for the Rangers)
  • First-base coach: Travis Jankowski (former outfielder for the Rangers)
  • Major league hitting coach: Alex Cintrón (previously with the Houston Astros)
  • bullpen coach: Colby Suggs (previously with the Minnesota Twins)

Coaching Experience of New Members

Barajas played for the Rangers from 2004 to 2006 before joining Schumaker’s Miami staff in 2023-24. Jankowski, part of the Rangers’ World Series championship team two years ago, brings relevant playing experience.

Alex Cintrón arrives after spending nine seasons with the Astros, seven of which were as a hitting coach. Colby Suggs has experience as Minnesota’s bullpen coach for over three years.

Key Staff Changes

Justin Viele assumes the role of lead hitting coach after working as a co-instructor last season. He replaces Bret Boone, who will not return following a previous leadership change in the offense department.

Jordan Tiegs has stepped up from bullpen coach to pitching coach, continuing the team’s commitment to developing talent from within. This blend of experienced and new coaches aims to establish a stronger foundation for the Rangers in the 2026 season.
