Jimoh Propels Canada Forward with Goal Against Chile at U-17 World Cup

The Canadian U-17 national team made history in the ongoing World Cup by advancing to the knockout stage for the first time. This achievement comes despite a 2-1 loss to Chile in their final group stage match. On the last day of Group K play, all four teams ended with four points each, but Canada secured second place based on head-to-head records and goal difference.
Group Stage Performance
In their group, Canada finished ahead of Uganda and Chile, while narrowly trailing France on goal difference. Their performance included:
- A 2-1 win over Uganda in their tournament opener.
- A 0-0 draw against France.
- A final match loss to Chile.
Key Moments Against Chile
In the match against Chile, Shola Jimoh, from York United, opened the scoring with a precise finish into the bottom left corner, assisted by Kevin Khan. This marked Jimoh’s sixth goal for Canada at the U-17 level.
Although Canada had a chance to equalize late in the game, Van Parker missed a penalty in stoppage time, sending the ball over the bar. Additionally, Sergei Kozlovskiy of Atlético Ottawa made his tournament debut, appearing as a substitute in the second half.
Historic Achievements
This tournament has been a breakthrough for Canada. They celebrated their first win at a U-17 World Cup in nine appearances. Following their group stage performance, Canada will advance to the round of 32, scheduled for either Friday or Saturday.
Their next opponent will be determined after the conclusion of matches in other groups, with seeding based on overall performance in the group stage.
