11 November Commemorations Feature Sonnerie aux Morts and Funeral Urn

Every year, France commemorates the end of World War I on November 11. In 2023, this significant event marks the 107th anniversary of the Armistice of 1918, which ended hostilities on the Western Front. President Emmanuel Macron will lead a series of solemn ceremonies to honor those who lost their lives for France.
Commemorative Events by President Macron
This year, the ceremonies will begin at 10:05 AM at the Hôtel des Invalides, a historic monument commissioned by Louis XIV. President Macron will unveil a plaque dedicated to the Alsatians and Mosellans who died during World War II while under German occupation. This memorial recognizes the tragedy of the “Malgré-nous,” a term used for those forcibly conscripted during the war.
Details of the Commemorations
- Date: November 11, 2023
- Time: 10:05 AM, Hôtel des Invalides
- Events: Plaque unveiling, sounding of the “sonnerie aux morts,” and observance of a minute of silence.
The French President’s program also includes a stop in front of the statue of Georges Clemenceau at the Grand Palais. Clemenceau, who served as Prime Minister during a critical period in the war, played a key role in France’s military success. He is often referred to as “Père la Victoire” or “Father of Victory.”
Ceremony at the Arc de Triomphe
President Macron will then travel to the Arc de Triomphe, built by Napoleon to celebrate French victories. At approximately 11:15 AM, he will review the troops and hear the military “cesser-le-feu” call. Following this, he will lay a floral tribute and revive the “flame of remembrance” at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
- Symbolic Gesture: An urn adorned with a bleuet de France, representing support for veterans, will be placed on the tomb.
- Contents: The urn contains soil from 16 memorial sites of World War I.
After a minute of silence and the playing of “La Marseillaise,” a cavalry parade by the Republican Guard is scheduled around 12:25 PM.
Gathering at the Élysée
Following the formal events, President Macron will host a lunch at the Élysée for representatives from various patriotic organizations. This gathering will include flag bearers, members of the veterans’ community, and committee members from the Flame of Remembrance.
These commemorations highlight France’s commitment to honoring its history and the sacrifices made by countless individuals. The ceremonies serve as a poignant reminder of the past and the ongoing legacy of those who fought for the nation.
