49ers Confirm QB Jones Start; Purdy Advances in Recovery

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — In a key NFC West matchup, the San Francisco 49ers have confirmed that Mac Jones will start at quarterback against the Los Angeles Rams. This decision comes as Brock Purdy continues to recover from a right big toe injury, which he initially sustained in Week 1 and aggravated again in Week 4.

Mac Jones Assumes Starting Role

Head coach Kyle Shanahan announced that Purdy still isn’t ready to return to the starting lineup, listing him as questionable for Sunday’s game. Despite a more intensive practice regimen this week, Purdy remains limited and his participation in the game will depend on how he feels closer to kickoff.

  • Purdy has missed seven games this season.
  • Jones has a record of 5-2 in games started this year.

Performance of Mac Jones

Jones has been performing admirably, averaging 261.7 passing yards per game, placing him fourth in the NFL. He has thrown 10 touchdowns and five interceptions, with a QBR of 61.2. His ability to play through injuries has solidified his reputation within the 49ers locker room.

Injury Updates

The 49ers are also dealing with several injuries on their roster. Wide receiver Ricky Pearsall remains out due to a right knee injury and has not practiced all week. Shanahan indicated that Pearsall is making progress, but hasn’t yet met the physical benchmarks necessary for his return.

In addition, the defensive line has faced significant setbacks. Key players Alfred Collins, Kalia Davis, and Keion White were limited in practice this week due to various injuries. The 49ers have already lost starting defensive ends Nick Bosa and Mykel Williams to ACL injuries, compounding their defensive challenges.

  • Collins, Davis, and White are all questionable for Sunday.
  • Bosa and Williams are out for the season.

Positive Developments

On a brighter note, defensive end Bryce Huff and center Jake Brendel have returned from hamstring injuries and are expected to play against the Rams. Additionally, guard Ben Bartch will be activated from injured reserve, further bolstering their lineup.

The 49ers are looking to build on their recent performances as they face the Rams. With Mac Jones at the helm, they aim to secure a crucial victory in the competitive NFC West.
