Tidal Surge in Tenerife Leaves 3 Dead, 15 Injured

Recent tidal surges in Tenerife have resulted in tragic losses and numerous injuries. On Saturday, powerful waves swept three individuals into the Atlantic Ocean, prompting emergency responses along the coast.

Tidal Surge Incidents Claim Lives in Tenerife

Two men and a woman were confirmed dead due to the dangerous weather conditions. The incidents occurred at various locations on the island during a significant tidal surge.

Details of the Fatalities

  • A 43-year-old man from La Orotava fell into the water at Charco del Viento. He was airlifted to a hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
  • Another man was discovered floating off Cabezo beach in El Medano. Lifeguards were unable to revive him, leading to a death at the scene.
  • A 79-year-old Dutch woman suffered a heart attack when waves overpowered her and others at Puerto de la Cruz. Sadly, she also did not survive.

Injuries and Emergency Responses

In addition to the fatalities, around 15 individuals sustained injuries in four separate incidents across Tenerife. Emergency services swiftly transported those injured to local hospitals for treatment.

Warnings and Precautions

Authorities had previously issued a warning regarding the tidal surge and strong winds. Residents and tourists were advised to stay away from coastal paths and refrain from capturing photos and videos of the tumultuous seas.

The Canary Islands, which include Tenerife, are currently under alert for coastal hazards. Officials continue monitoring the situation closely as they prioritize public safety.
