Powerful Earthquake Hits Japan’s Coast; Tsunami Advisory Issued

A major earthquake struck Japan’s northern coast on Sunday evening, prompting officials to issue a tsunami advisory. The Japan Meteorological Agency reported a preliminary magnitude of 6.7 for the quake. It occurred off the coast of Iwate Prefecture at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) at approximately 5 p.m. local time.

Details of the Earthquake

Initial reports indicated no injuries or significant damage resulting from the seismic event. Additionally, the two nuclear power plants in the vicinity reported no abnormalities. However, an advisory for a tsunami of up to 1 meter (3 feet) was issued for the northern coastal area and remained active for at least one hour after the earthquake.

Tsunami Advisory and Effects

  • Initial tsunami waves detected were about 10 centimeters (4 inches) in Ofunato City and Ominato port.
  • Higher waves of approximately 20 centimeters (8 inches) were recorded at the coastal region of Kuji.
  • Authorities warned residents to stay away from coastal areas due to the ongoing tsunami threat.
  • Additional shaking was anticipated, with follow-up quakes occurring in Iwate Prefecture.

Impacts of the Earthquake

The tremors caused temporary delays to bullet trains operated by JR East railways. Power shortages were also reported in various areas, adding to the distress following the initial quake.

Seismic Activity in Japan

The U.S. Geological Survey reported a slightly higher preliminary magnitude of 6.8 for the earthquake. Japan remains highly susceptible to seismic activity due to its location on the Pacific “Ring of Fire.” Notably, the region has a history of devastating earthquakes, including the catastrophic event in March 2011.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, emphasizing the need for caution in the affected areas.
