Guangzhou Enforces Traffic Control, Alters Transit for National Games Nov 6

Guangzhou has implemented new traffic control measures and transit adjustments as it prepares to host the significant events of China’s 15th National Games, the 12th National Games for Persons with Disabilities, and the 9th National Special Olympic Games. These measures took effect on November 6, 2025, and will continue until December 14, 2025.
Traffic Measures Overview
To manage traffic flow during these events, several important rules have been enacted:
- Vehicle Restrictions: From November 6 to December 14, Guangzhou-registered vehicles will follow an odd-even regulation based on the last digit of their license plates.
- Restriction Hours: Operating from 7:30 AM to 7:30 PM daily, with extended hours until midnight on November 9 and December 8 for opening ceremonies.
- Control Zones: Designated traffic zones will vary depending on the event, with entry prohibited for non-local vehicles.
Additional Truck Limitations
On the opening day of the 15th National Games, November 9, additional truck restrictions will apply:
- Heavy trucks will be banned from major routes from 7:00 AM to 12:00 AM.
- From November 10 onward, heavy trucks will face daily restrictions from 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM on specific expressways.
Grace Period and Exemptions
To assist drivers adjusting to the new rules, a three-day grace period is in effect from November 6 to November 8 and December 5 to December 7, allowing warnings rather than fines for first-time violations.
Exempt vehicles include:
- Emergency and service vehicles (police, fire, ambulance, rescue)
- Official Games vehicles with valid passes
- Specialty vehicles like postal trucks and school buses
- Funeral hearses
Dedicated Transportation Lanes
Temporary lanes connecting key transport hubs, hotels, and main venues will be operational daily from 7:30 AM to 7:30 PM during event periods. Special routes will link Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport to hotels and venues.
Public Transit Modifications
Metro and bus services will also be adjusted, particularly on November 9:
- Metro Lines 4 and 21 will suspend operations at select stations.
- Feeder buses will be available to cover suspended metro sections, operating from 6:00 AM to 12:00 AM.
Taxi Services and Promotions
Guangzhou Public Transport Group is set to deploy over 7,000 taxis for round-the-clock service. Special promotions will be available for passengers using the “如约出行” WeChat mini-program, focusing on key metro stations from the evening of November 9.
The implementation of these traffic control measures and transit adjustments is aimed at ensuring smooth operations during these high-profile events taking place in Guangzhou.
