LIV Golf Expands to 72-Hole Tournaments Starting in 2026

LIV Golf has announced a significant change to its tournament structure, expanding to 72-hole events starting in 2026. This decision marks a shift from its traditional 54-hole format, which it previously promoted as a much faster alternative to the PGA Tour.
LIV Golf’s Innovative Approach
The league has introduced features like shotgun starts and simultaneous individual and team competitions, which will remain part of the tournament experience. However, with the new format, tournaments will generally begin on Thursday, adding an extra round to the competition.
CEO’s Insight
Scott O’Neil, the CEO of LIV Golf League, emphasized the organization’s commitment to growth. He stated, “The most successful leagues around the world continue to innovate. As an emerging league, we are no different.” This highlights LIV Golf’s aim to adapt and improve for both its players and fans.
Funding and Future Aspirations
LIV Golf is financially backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund. The league is actively seeking inclusion in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) to provide golfers a pathway to major championships.
- LIV Golf’s application for OWGR status was denied in October 2023.
- The rejection was partly due to concerns about the closed nature of the league and the impact of team competition on individual results.
- The league refiled its application in July.
The Players’ Perspective
Top players, like Crushers GC captain Bryson DeChambeau, have expressed support for the change. DeChambeau noted that aligning with the historic 72-hole format is a proactive step for LIV Golf, highlighting the league’s willingness to adapt to enhance the player and spectator experience.
Upcoming Season Details
LIV Golf will kick off its 2026 season from February 4-7 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This inaugural event under the new tournament structure will set the tone for the league’s future.
