The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has announced the opening of modernized elevators at the Fordham Road subway station, which services the 4 train in Fordham Manor. This upgrade was officially revealed on October 31, 2025, as part of a broader initiative to enhance accessibility and safety for subway riders.
Key Features of the Modernized Elevators
The new elevators provide essential access points. They facilitate movement from:
- Street level to the mezzanine.
- Mezzanine to the Woodlawn-bound platform.
- Mezzanine to the Manhattan-bound platform.
These elevators are particularly significant as Fordham Road station accommodates approximately 6,500 passengers each weekday.
Enhancements for Reliability and Security
According to MTA officials, regular modernization of elevators is vital for maintaining their efficiency and minimizing disruptions. Jamie Torres-Springer, the MTA’s President of Construction and Development, stated, “Thousands of customers a day are in for a smoother, more reliable ride.”
Mid-American Elevator Company was responsible for the installation and replacement of the elevator systems. The enhancements included:
- Full replacement of elevator cabs and equipment within the shafts and pits.
- Renovation of elevator enclosures.
- Modernization of machine room, electrical, and mechanical equipment.
- Upgrades to intercom systems and surveillance cameras for improved safety.
Ongoing Projects and Future Improvements
The MTA has several other elevator replacement projects underway. Notably, areas at Yankee Stadium in The Bronx are also slated for elevator upgrades. Riders are advised to check the status of elevators currently being replaced to stay informed about travel impacts.
