P.E.I. Towns Delay Halloween Amid Severe Weather Forecast

Trick-or-treating in several towns on Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.) has been delayed due to severe weather forecasts. Environment Canada issued a special weather statement warning of heavy rain and strong winds. As a result, Charlottetown, Cornwall, Stratford, and Summerside will shift Halloween festivities to Saturday.
P.E.I. Towns Postpone Halloween Celebrations
The joint statement released by the municipalities emphasizes the safety of young trick-or-treaters as their top priority. “The safety of our young trick-or-treaters is our top priority,” the statement read.
Details of the Postponement
- Original Halloween Observation: Postponed to Saturday.
- Curfew: The 8 p.m. curfew will remain in effect.
- Weather Forecast: Expected heavy rain and winds of up to 70 km/h with 30-40 mm of rain.
Corey Frizzell, a town councillor and chair of Cornwall’s municipal and emergency services, commented on the decision: “We want to err on the side of caution.” Fellow residents agree, including Danielle Jesso, who plans to take her daughter Chloe out on Saturday for her first trick-or-treating experience. Jesso expressed relief that the celebration would not be compromised by inclement weather.
Mayor Noémie Wheatley of Warren Grove echoed these sentiments, saying that the decision ultimately centers on providing the best experience for children. “As long as the kids have a good time and everybody’s safe, that’s all that really matters,” Wheatley affirmed.
Weather Implications for Halloween
Environment Canada anticipates that rainy weather will affect Friday evening with significant rainfall expected. Meteorologist Jay Scotland noted that while the heaviest rainfall will occur in the afternoon, strong winds and sporadic showers may persist into the evening.
- Friday Forecast: Heavy rain and wind, with possible gusts up to 70 km/h.
- Saturday Outlook: Cooler temperatures, scattered showers, but no heavy rain.
Other areas, such as Lennox Island and Abegweit First Nations, have opted to proceed with Halloween activities on Thursday to avoid the anticipated storm. Communities throughout P.E.I. will announce their local decisions regarding the trick-or-treating schedule. Residents are encouraged to check with their municipal councils for updates.
Preparations for Severe Weather
As the storm approaches, Environment Canada advises Islanders to prepare by clearing storm drains and securing outdoor items like Halloween decorations. This proactive approach aims to minimize disruptions caused by the expected severe weather.
