Grutness Pier Damaged by Severe Council Storm

Recent severe weather has led to damage at Grutness Pier in Sumburgh, prompting an assessment by contractors. The pier, currently under construction as part of the Fair Isle ferry replacement project, suffered from the effects of Storm Benjamin, which brought strong northerly winds and heavy sea swells over the weekend.

Impact of Storm Benjamin on Grutness Pier

Contractors reported that the storm caused significant disruption, moving some of the initial stonework intended as rock fill for the new ferry project. The Shetland Islands Council confirmed the damage, stating that contractors are now evaluating the necessary repairs.

In response to the storm damage, the council announced plans to take preventative measures against future weather impacts in the upcoming months.
