Daniel Băluță Named PSD Candidate for Bucharest Mayor

Daniel Băluță has been selected as the candidate for the Bucharest mayoralty by the Social Democratic Party (PSD). This decision was announced by Grindeanu after a meeting with colleagues from the Bucharest organization. The party will formally present Băluță’s candidacy at the national political committee meeting.

Leadership Role in PSD Bucharest

Alongside his mayoral candidacy, Băluță will also assume leadership of the PSD Bucharest organization. Current head Gabriela Firea has expressed her support for him. Băluță conveyed his gratitude for the trust placed in him, emphasizing the significance of the upcoming elections.

Focus on Bucharest’s Urban Challenges

In addressing residents, Băluță highlighted that the elections focus on past achievements within the 4th sector of Bucharest. He pointed to accomplishments in public transport, healthcare, education, and childcare facilities. However, he stressed that these initiatives need to be expanded citywide.

When asked about key issues facing Bucharest, Băluță stated the problems are complex. He noted traffic management and infrastructural development disparity between the city’s northern and southern parts as critical concerns. He identified urgent urban issues, including central heating systems, traffic congestion, pollution, and the deterioration of buildings vulnerable to seismic activity.

A Vision for the Future

Băluță shared his vision for revitalizing the city, stressing the need for infrastructure repairs before pursuing new projects, including an airport in the south and additional parks and theaters. He wants to ensure that residents feel at home in their city, avoiding the issues that have plagued Bucharest in the past.

Current Polling Landscape

Recent polls indicate a competitive race for the mayoralty. A survey by Avangarde shows Băluță leading with 25% support, closely followed by the mayor from the National Liberal Party (PNL), Ciprian Ciucu, with 23%. Another poll conducted by CURS supports these findings, placing Băluță at 25% and showing Cătălin Drulă (USR) and Ciucu each at 18%.

Political Background

Daniel Băluță’s political career took off when he was first elected as mayor of the 4th sector in June 2016. He successfully secured re-election in both 2020 and 2024. His interim leadership began in November 2015, following the resignation of Cristian Popescu Piedone after the Colectiv tragedy. Băluță is a trained dentist by profession, bringing a unique perspective to his political role.
