Lewis, 41, Joins Broncos Amid Tight End Shortage

Marcedes Lewis, a seasoned tight end, has joined the Denver Broncos’ practice squad amid a critical shortage at the position. The signing was confirmed by team sources on Wednesday, following Lewis’s workout with the Broncos the previous day.
Lewis’s NFL Journey
At 41 years old, Lewis is entering his 20th season in the NFL. He was originally drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars as the 28th overall pick in the 2006 NFL Draft. That same year marked a significant beginning for both Lewis and current Broncos head coach Sean Payton, who started his head coaching career with the New Orleans Saints.
Tight End Depth Concerns
The Broncos have been struggling with tight end depth due to injuries. Lucas Krull, a key player at the position, fractured his foot earlier this season and is currently on injured reserve. Additionally, Nate Adkins suffered a knee injury during the team’s recent victory over the Dallas Cowboys and is not expected to return soon. This puts added pressure on the remaining tight ends.
- Evan Engram and Adam Trautman are the only two healthy tight ends on the Broncos’ active roster.
- Patrick Murtagh and Caleb Lohner are available on the practice squad.
- Lohner is a seventh-round draft pick who had a brief college football career after switching from basketball.
Upcoming Games
Lewis is expected to be considered for elevation to the active roster for Sunday’s matchup against the Houston Texans. Last season, he played in 17 games for the Chicago Bears, starting in four. His performance included one reception and participation in 19 percent of the Bears’ offensive snaps, along with contributions on special teams.
With Lewis’s extensive experience and reputation as one of the league’s top blocking tight ends, he could provide much-needed support for the Broncos during this challenging period.
