Montreal Transit Faces Rush Hour Limits Amid Potential Month-Long Strike

Montreal’s public transit services are facing significant restrictions during November due to a potential strike by maintenance workers. Quebec’s labor tribunal has authorized the employees of the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) to strike for a month, starting at 10 p.m. on October 31.

Details of the Potential Strike

The Syndicat du transport de Montréal represents approximately 2,400 maintenance workers who are planning this substantial strike. This planned action comes after the union has already conducted two strikes earlier this year.

Should the workers proceed with the strike as planned, services will be limited to rush hours. This strike is expected to last until 10 p.m. on November 28. The tribunal’s ruling does not allow for any exceptions, even for the municipal elections scheduled for November 2.

Impact on Transit Services

During the strike period, only rush-hour services will be maintained for buses and Metros. However, paratransit services will continue without interruption.

  • Bus Services:
    • Normal operation from 6:15 a.m. to 9:15 a.m.
    • Normal operation from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
    • Night bus service from 11:15 p.m. to 1:15 a.m.
  • Metro Services:
    • Normal operation from 6:30 a.m. to 9:40 a.m.
    • Normal operation from 2:45 p.m. to 5:50 p.m.
    • Night Metro service from 11:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.

As negotiations continue between STM and its maintenance workers, many residents are anxiously monitoring the situation. The possible month-long strike poses challenges for commuters who rely heavily on public transit during their daily routines.
