Trump Admits He’s Barred from Third Term, Calls It ‘Too Bad’

On a recent flight to South Korea, President Donald Trump acknowledged the limitations imposed by the U.S. Constitution regarding presidential terms. He stated his understanding of the 22nd Amendment, which prevents anyone from being elected to the presidency more than twice.

Trump’s Admission

Trump made his comments to reporters aboard Air Force One. He emphasized, “I would say that, if you read it, it’s pretty clear.” He also expressed his disappointment, saying, “I’m not allowed to run, it’s too bad.” This statement follows his frequent hints about a potential run in 2028, including wearing “Trump 2028” hats.

Current Polling and Political Landscape

Despite the prospect of a third term becoming impossible, Trump noted that he has “the highest numbers that I’ve ever had.” However, his current approval rating is approximately 43%, with a disapproval rate of 54% according to recent polls. He reflected on the Constitution’s constraints, remarking, “Based on what I read, I guess I’m not allowed to run.”

Response from House Speaker

The issue has drawn attention within political circles, particularly after House Speaker Mike Johnson addressed it during a press conference. He described Trump as “having a good time…trolling” Democrats. Johnson also confirmed their discussions about the constitutional limitations, stating, “I don’t see a way to amend the Constitution.”

Understanding the 22nd Amendment

The 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution establishes crucial rules for presidential elections. It was adopted in 1947 following President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s unprecedented four terms in office. The amendment states:

  • No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice.
  • No person who has held the office of President for more than two years of a term to which another person was elected shall be elected more than once.

This amendment reflects the desire to limit the concentration of power in a single individual, ensuring a healthy rotation of leadership in the American political system. Trump’s recent comments highlight ongoing discussions about presidential eligibility and potential electoral futures.
