Truck Crash on I-59 Sees Diseased Lab Monkeys Escaping from Tulane University

A truck transporting rhesus monkeys from Tulane University crashed on Interstate 59 on Tuesday, close to mile marker 117. The incident raised concerns over the potential escape of the animals, which are known to be aggressive.
Details of the Incident
Authorities stated that the monkeys weigh approximately 40 pounds each. They pose health risks and require specialized protective gear for handling. Tulane University has been informed about the situation and is preparing a response team to recover the animals.
Monkey Characteristics and Safety Concerns
- Species: Rhesus monkeys
- Weight: About 40 pounds each
- Behavior: Aggressive toward humans
- Health risks: Potential threats require protective equipment
These monkeys are part of the Tulane National Biomedical Research Center’s programs. While they are intended for research collaboration, they belong to an external entity and are confirmed to be non-infectious.
Response from Authorities
The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office has advised a strict protocol: if any monkeys escape the wrecked vehicle, they should be euthanized. Tragically, five monkeys have already been shot, while one remains unaccounted for.
Efforts are ongoing to manage the situation effectively. Tulane University is closely collaborating with local authorities and deploying animal care specialists as needed.
