The Finch West LRT is set to officially open for public use in Toronto on December 7, 2023. This announcement marks a significant milestone as this route has reportedly outpaced the Eglinton Crosstown LRT in the timeline for public accessibility.

Operational Testing and Transition to TTC

The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) is gearing up to take over the operation of the Finch West LRT. This transition follows successful completion of 30 days of operational testing without any significant issues. The provincial government confirmed that the revenue service demonstration was finished, paving the way for the TTC to assume full operational control. This handover is expected to be completed by November 3.

Finch West LRT Features

  • Estimated to serve over 51,000 passengers daily.
  • Route length connecting Finch West Station on Line 1 to Humber College Station.
  • Total of 16 stops along the route.
  • Travel time approximately 34 minutes from end to end.

While the Finch West LRT has successfully passed its testing phases, officials from Metrolinx have noted that there are still some necessary certificates and final assessments pending. A spokesperson for the TTC expressed optimism about the completion of the revenue service demonstration, emphasizing their collaboration with Metrolinx to ensure operational safety and reliability.

Construction Timeline

Construction for the Finch West LRT began in 2019, making it a long-awaited addition to Toronto’s transit system. Once operational, it is anticipated to greatly enhance public transportation options for residents, particularly in the northern areas of the city.

The opening of the Finch West LRT is poised to facilitate better connectivity and serve as a crucial component of Toronto’s expanding transit network.
