Altrincham Dismiss Phil Parkinson Amidst Winless League Streak

Altrincham has officially parted ways with Phil Parkinson after an extensive tenure of eight years. The decision follows a disappointing spell, with the team not securing a victory in their last seven matches. Parkinson took charge in April 2017, leading Altrincham to promotion and a playoff spot during the 2023-24 season.

Recent Challenges Faced by Altrincham

The recent run of dismal performances, including six losses out of seven games, saw Altrincham drop to 20th in the National League table. They currently sit just one point above the relegation zone. Parkinson’s departure comes alongside that of his assistant, Neil Sorvel.

  • Joined Altrincham: April 2017
  • Playoff spot achieved: 2023-24 season
  • Recent league position: 20th, with one point above relegation
  • Winless streak: Seven matches
  • Key defeats: Six out of seven matches

Leadership Change and Future Plans

Following Parkinson’s exit, Neil Gibson, former manager of Wealdstone, has been appointed as interim manager. Chairman Mark Luby acknowledged the positive contributions made by Parkinson and Sorvel, stating they left the club in a stronger position than when they arrived. However, he emphasized the urgency of the club’s current situation.

Altrincham received investment from Simon and Michelle Orange, owners of Sale Sharks, prior to this season. Despite early success, including victories against Aldershot Town and Sutton United, the team struggled significantly after September. Their last draw was against Wealdstone on October 4, with a subsequent 3-1 loss to Woking marking Parkinson’s final game.

Moving Forward

The club is now undertaking a process to establish a new leadership team that aligns with their long-term vision. Gibson expressed his enthusiasm for the role, highlighting the opportunity to bring positive changes to the team. He aims to uplift the club’s position in the league, focusing on upcoming fixtures.

As Altrincham looks to reverse their fortunes, the immediate goal will be to rally the squad and climb from their current position in the table. The search for a permanent manager continues, with the focus on building momentum for the remainder of the season.
