The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has revealed plans to enhance its global outreach by establishing 55 new missions by July 1, 2026. This initiative aims to support a growing number of full-time missionaries and meet the needs of expanding congregations worldwide.
Expansion of Missions
The new missions will adjust existing mission boundaries, increasing the total number of worldwide missions to 506. President Dallin H. Oaks expressed enthusiasm over the surge in young members answering the call to serve, emphasizing the positive impact missionaries have in promoting the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Current Missionary Statistics
- Number of missionaries increased from over 65,000 at the end of 2022 to more than 84,000 by the end of 2023.
- Missionaries serve in over 150 countries and speak more than 60 languages.
Elder Quentin L. Cook, chair of the Church’s Missionary Executive Council, noted that the additional missions would allow for improved support and mentorship for the missionaries. This expansion is intended to balance the distribution of missionaries across each mission.
