Life Sentences for Two in Custom House Gang Murder Case

In a significant ruling, two men were sentenced to life imprisonment for their involvement in the brutal murder of 22-year-old Mr. Deen-Jah, known as Grinna. Judge Anthony Leonard KC handed down the sentences, imposing a minimum term of 28 years for Akinsoji and 22 years for Keita.

Details of the Custom House Gang Murder Case

The court revealed how the attack was premeditated. Akinsoji and Keita dressed in black clothing, wore balaclavas, and equipped themselves with gloves for the assault. They used a stolen black Mercedes to chase the victim, ultimately forcing him into BJ Wines off-licence.

During a violent struggle, Akinsoji stabbed Mr. Deen-Jah in the heart. Akinsoji and Keita fled the scene immediately after the attack. Emergency services were called, but tragically, Mr. Deen-Jah succumbed to his injuries and was declared dead at the location, just 426 feet (130 meters) from his residence.

Background of the Incident

Prosecutor Anthony Orchard KC presented a compelling case during the trial. He stated, “This killing was not a spontaneous act of violence, but an attack planned against a background of street violence between two east London gangs.”

  • Victim: Mr. Deen-Jah (Street name: Grinna)
  • Location of murder: BJ Wines off-licence
  • Distance from victim’s home: 426 feet (130 meters)
  • Sentences: Akinsoji – 28 years, Keita – 22 years

Ten days prior to the murder, Akinsoji released a rap video titled “Armed And Ready,” where he expressed his intention to evade capture, stating, “No face, no case, no evvy (evidence).” The affiliations of the defendants were also disclosed during the proceedings. Akinsoji was associated with the Woodgrange gang, while Mr. Deen-Jah was linked to the Custom House gang. Keita, however, denied any gang affiliation and chose not to testify during the trial at the Old Bailey.

Conclusion

The convictions in the Custom House gang murder case underline the severe consequences of gang-related violence. The sentences reflect the court’s stance on such premeditated attacks within the community.
