Asylum Seeker Convicted for Murdering Hotel Worker

An asylum seeker from Sudan, Deng Chol Majek, has been convicted of murdering a hotel worker, Rhiannon Skye Whyte, at a train station in West Midlands. The crime took place on October 20 last year, near the Park Inn hotel in Walsall, where both individuals were present.
Murder Details and Investigation
The incident was captured on CCTV, showing Majek following Whyte from the hotel to the nearby Bescot Stadium station. There, she was brutally attacked, receiving 19 stab wounds to the head with a screwdriver, bringing the total to 23. Despite urgent medical attention, Whyte succumbed to her injuries three days later.
Behavior Before and After the Attack
- Majek had previously been reported to hotel security for behaving inappropriately around female staff.
- Immediately following the attack, he walked to a nearby area to purchase beer, seemingly trying to cover up evidence.
- CCTV footage recorded him attempting to wipe blood from his trousers.
- Later that night, he returned to the hotel, changed his shoes, and was seen dancing with other residents while emergency vehicles responded to the incident.
During the trial at Wolverhampton Crown Court, Majek denied any involvement in the murder, despite compelling evidence against him. Prosecutor Michelle Heeley criticized his lack of remorse, stating his post-attack behavior was “utterly callous.”
Background of the Victim
Rhiannon Skye Whyte, 27, was remembered by her family for her joyful spirit and caring personality. Her sister, Alex Whyte, spoke about Rhiannon’s desire to make others happy and her close bond with family. The tragedy has left a profound impact on those who loved her.
