China Eastern Airlines Resumes Flights as China-India Air Links Reopen

China Eastern Airlines is set to resume flights between Shanghai and Delhi on November 9, marking a significant step in reopening air links between the two nations. This renewal follows a five-year suspension resulting from diplomatic tensions.

Details of the Resumed Flights

The resumed Shanghai-Delhi flights will operate three times a week. Scheduled days for the service are:

  • Wednesdays
  • Saturdays
  • Sundays

This development was confirmed via the airline’s website, reflecting a gradual thaw in relations between China and India.

Background on Diplomatic Relations

The resumption of direct flights comes after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited China for the first time in over seven years. The visit coincided with a meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, where discussions on trade relations took place. Modi addressed the growing trade deficit between the two countries during the talks.

Future Prospects for Air Travel

India’s foreign ministry supported the restart of commercial flights earlier in October. Furthermore, India’s largest airline, IndiGo, announced plans for daily non-stop flights between Kolkata and Guangzhou. This initiative could lead to more direct routes improving connectivity between India and China.

The suspension of direct air links was initiated in 2020 after border clashes led to heightened military tensions. This recent announcement is a positive indicator of improved relations and increased trade opportunities.
