Gipsy Hill and Montgomery Hall Pools May Extend Swimming Season

Staunton may see an extension of its swimming season next summer, particularly at the Gypsy Hill and Montgomery Hall pools. Traditionally, these facilities have closed in early August, coinciding with the beginning of the school year.
Potential Changes to the Pool Season
According to Chris Tuttle, who heads the Parks and Recreation Department, the pools typically shut down on the first school day. However, recent school calendar changes suggest that students will return earlier, making it tougher for the community to enjoy the pools during peak summer heat.
New Facilities Under Construction
A new pool house is being constructed at Gypsy Hill Park to address outdated facilities. The previous pool house, established in 1958, faced numerous issues, including:
- Corroded steel joists
- Deteriorating exterior walls
- Fixtures not meeting modern code standards
The upcoming facility will feature ground-level access, unisex restrooms with better privacy, a covered concession area, and a modern design. This renovation is slated for completion by the start of the next swim season.
City Council Discussions
During the Staunton City Council meeting on October 9, City Manager Leslie Beauregard expressed enthusiasm about potentially extending the pool season until Labor Day. She stated, “I am very excited about possibly… I would love to, fingers crossed, work very hard to get the season extended.”
Staffing Challenges
Despite the potential for an extended season, staffing remains a significant concern. Tuttle indicated that the availability of lifeguards—primarily students—poses a challenge once the academic year begins. However, he confirmed that discussions about extending the season for both Gypsy Hill and Montgomery Hall pools are ongoing.
The community eagerly anticipates the completion of the new pool facilities and the possibility of enjoying a longer swimming season next summer.
