USA Today Lists Eight Candidates for Florida Coaching Role

Billy Napier’s recent departure from the University of Florida’s football program has sparked a significant coaching search. Following a disappointing 3-4 start this season, Napier concluded his tenure with a 22-23 overall record, leading to one of college football’s most sought-after coaching positions now being vacant.

USA Today Lists Eight Candidates for Florida Coaching Role

With the head coaching position officially open, USA Today has identified eight potential candidates to consider in the upcoming hiring process. Each candidate brings unique qualifications and coaching records that could help revive the Gators’ football program.

Potential Candidates

  • Eli Drinkwitz – Current head coach at Missouri with a record of 56-26 (.683). He has a strong performance within the SEC and could be a safe hire for Florida.
  • Lane Kiffin – Head coach at Ole Miss, boasting a 112-53 (.679) career record. Kiffin is considered a home-run hire, although it remains uncertain if he would leave a strong program.
  • James Franklin – With a 128-60 (.681) record, the Penn State head coach is regarded as a top candidate. His proven success may lure him back into coaching quickly.
  • Dan Lanning – Currently at Oregon with a remarkable 41-7 (.854) record. Although he may be content at Oregon, Florida could entice him with a lucrative offer.
  • Kenny Dillingham – At Arizona State, he has achieved a 19-14 (.576) record, with a recent surge to 16-5 (.762). His young age makes him an intriguing option but also a risk for Florida.
  • Jon Sumrall – Known for his stellar 38-10 (.792) record, Sumrall has developed strong ties in the SEC and is seen as the top mid-major candidate.
  • Rhett Lashlee – He currently sits at 34-14 (.708) at SMU. While predicted to be a candidate for Arkansas, the Florida job might appeal to him as well.
  • Urban Meyer – Although not coached since 2018, Meyer’s impressive 187-32 (.854) record and past success at Florida could make him a polarizing yet compelling option.

As the Gators explore their options, the upcoming months will be critical in selecting a coach capable of leading the program back to its former glory.
