New England Patriots Sign Ex-Chargers Linebacker

In a strategic move to bolster their defense, the New England Patriots have signed linebacker Caleb Murphy, previously with the Los Angeles Chargers. This acquisition follows the Patriots’ recent 31-13 win against the Tennessee Titans in Week 7 of the NFL season.
Caleb Murphy Joins the Patriots
Caleb Murphy, a four-year NFL veteran, was waived by the Chargers on October 18. He began his professional career as an undrafted rookie free agent, signing with the Tennessee Titans in April 2023. During his time with the Titans, he played under head coach Mike Vrabel, participating in three games in the 2023 season.
After being waived by the Titans on October 26, Murphy spent four days without a team before being picked up by the Chargers, where he contributed to three games in 2024. He later signed a reserve/future contract in January 2025. Throughout his career, Murphy played in six games this season, accumulating 17 tackles and one quarterback hit over his tenure.
Impressive College Career
While Murphy’s professional achievements are modest, his college performance at Ferris State was outstanding. As a senior, he set an NCAA single-season record with 25.5 sacks and tied another record with 39 tackles for loss. His efforts helped Ferris State secure consecutive national championships.

Adding Depth to the Roster
Murphy joins a competitive linebacker group within the Patriots, including players like Harold Landry III, Keion White, and Robert Spillane. His signing fills the team’s last open spot on the 53-man active roster.
There is speculation surrounding the veteran Anfernee Jennings, who has been sidelined for two weeks due to an ankle injury and is often mentioned in trade discussions. Whether Murphy’s addition signals a potential roster move involving Jennings remains uncertain.
