The city of Anchorage is gearing up to accommodate up to 2,000 evacuees from Western Alaska due to a severe storm. This storm, known as Typhoon Halong, occurred on Sunday, prompting urgent action from local authorities. Mayor Suzanne LaFrance announced the city’s plans to assist those displaced, recognizing many may need shelter throughout the winter months.
Evacuation and Assistance Efforts
On Wednesday, approximately 260 evacuees arrived in Anchorage. This number increased significantly by Thursday, with hundreds more expected in the coming days. While some individuals may find refuge with friends or family, many will require formal housing solutions.

- Egan Center
- Fairview Recreation Center
- Spenard Recreation Center
- These centers can collectively accommodate around 1,200 individuals.
The city is also exploring options for hotel accommodations and considering long-term housing solutions. Mayor LaFrance emphasized the uncertainty surrounding when residents might return to their communities, stating, “We are working closely with partners to rapidly develop housing options.”
Emergency Response Coordination
In response to the disaster, the Alaska National Guard has been instrumental in evacuation efforts. The Alaska Air National Guard’s C-17 Globemaster III successfully transported around 300 displaced residents from Bethel on October 15, 2023.
LaFrance noted that Anchorage is playing a supportive role, while the state of Alaska and the Red Cross coordinate emergency response efforts. The Red Cross is specifically focused on providing food and essential services to evacuees.
Support for Students and Families
As families adjust to new circumstances, the Anchorage School District is prepared to support incoming students. Superintendent Jharrett Bryantt highlighted the district’s readiness to enroll students and provide necessary resources, including:

- Mental health services
- Translation assistance
Bryantt conveyed the importance of creating an environment of belonging and hope within schools, ensuring that every child feels safe and valued during this challenging transition.

Individuals who wish to contribute can make donations through the Alaska Community Foundation to support ongoing relief efforts.
