Westbrook Joins Kings for 18th NBA Season

Nine-time NBA All-Star Russell Westbrook has officially signed with the Sacramento Kings for his 18th season in the league. His agent, Jeff Schwartz of Excel Sports Management, confirmed the deal on Wednesday. This move comes after consistent communication between Westbrook and the Kings throughout the offseason.

Contract Details

Westbrook is set to join the Kings on a one-year deal worth $3.6 million, which is the veteran’s minimum. The announcement is expected to be formalized later this week.

Westbrook’s Role

As a seasoned point guard, Westbrook brings much-needed depth to Sacramento. The Kings struggled last season, ranking 28th in bench points per game and 29th in bench assists per game. His experience allows him to function effectively as both a starter and a reserve.

Team Chemistry

Westbrook has established relationships with several players and staff in the organization. He shares connections with:

  • Domantas Sabonis
  • DeMar DeRozan
  • Zach LaVine
  • Dennis Schroder

This familiarity may contribute positively to team dynamics as the Kings aim to foster a culture of high effort and determination.

Performance Statistics

In the previous season with the Denver Nuggets, Westbrook played 75 games and made 36 starts. His averages included:

  • 13.3 points
  • 6.1 assists
  • 4.9 rebounds
  • 1.4 steals

He showcased an impressive shooting percentage of 44.9% from the field, along with a remarkable 52% on two-pointers, marking his career best.

Career Achievements

Westbrook, who turns 37 in November, boasts the most triple-doubles in NBA history, totaling 203. He is one of only two players, alongside LeBron James, to achieve at least:

  • 25,000 points
  • 8,000 rebounds
  • 8,000 assists

Currently, Westbrook has scored 26,205 career points and is just 506 points shy of surpassing Oscar Robertson as the highest-scoring point guard in NBA history. Additionally, he ranks eighth in career assists, needing 75 assists to join the elite group of players with over 10,000 career assists.

New chapter in Sacramento

After leaving the Oklahoma City Thunder, where he became a franchise legend, Westbrook embarks on his journey with the Kings. This marks his seventh team, following stints with the Houston Rockets, Washington Wizards, Los Angeles Lakers, LA Clippers, and Nuggets. With his experience and tenacity, Westbrook aims to make a significant impact this season.
