Western Alaska is facing a humanitarian crisis following the destruction caused by Typhoon Halong. The storm’s remnants devastated numerous communities, displacing over 1,500 residents from their homes.

As part of the ongoing response, the Alaska National Guard has been actively evacuating residents from affected villages. On October 15, 2025, more than 300 individuals were airlifted from Bethel to Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage.

The storm’s impact was severe, particularly in the villages of Kipnuk and Kwigillingok. Flood waters reached alarming levels, with Kwigillingok experiencing water heights of 6.3 feet above the highest recorded tides. Kipnuk witnessed nearly 7 feet of flooding, displacing homes entirely.
Comparisons to Past Disasters
U.S. Coast Guard Commander Capt. Christopher Culpepper remarked on the devastation, likening it to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The destruction of homes and the perilous conditions for residents were stark reminders of the storm’s severity.
Emergency Response and Supplies
The situation remains critical, with over 40 communities reporting damages from the storm. Alongside evacuations, state and federal agencies, including the U.S. Coast Guard, are delivering emergency supplies to Bethel.
