Gov. Abbott Deploys Texas National Guard to Austin for Weekend Protests

Governor Greg Abbott has issued a directive for the deployment of the Texas National Guard to Austin. This move comes in anticipation of a demonstration linked to the Antifa movement.

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) will also contribute personnel and tactical resources. This includes state troopers, Special Agents, and Texas Rangers, all working together to maintain law and order. According to the governor’s office, aircraft and other tactical assets will support the deployment.

Governor Abbott’s Statement

In a press release, Governor Abbott emphasized the need for safety in Austin. He stated, “Violence and destruction will never be tolerated in Texas.” The governor indicated that the actions were necessary to protect residents and property.

  • Deployment includes state troopers, Special Agents, and Texas Rangers.
  • National Guard soldiers will assist in the capital area.
  • Aircraft and tactical assets will provide additional support.

Abbott warned that Texas authorities are ready to deter criminal activities and collaborate with local law enforcement to address any violence or property damage.

Reactions from the Opposition

The Texas Democratic Party responded critically to Abbott’s announcement. Party Chairman Kendall Scudder accused the governor of using excessive force against individuals exercising their First Amendment rights.

Scudder stated that the deployment is unnecessary and likened Abbott’s actions to authoritarian practices. He urged protesters to remain peaceful and not allow themselves to be intimidated.

Texas House Representatives Minority Leader Gene Wu echoed similar sentiments. He condemned the deployment as an indication of a shift toward authoritarian rule, stating that it distracts from more pressing issues facing Texas residents, such as rising costs of living and homeownership challenges.

Monitoring Future Protests

The DPS Homeland Security Division will continue to monitor the planned protests and any other demonstrations across the state. The agency has pledged to investigate potential links to terrorist organizations and take swift action against unlawful activities.

This deployment adds to the already significant presence of DPS troopers working throughout Texas, highlighting the state’s commitment to law enforcement and public safety.
