Logan Welcomes Therapy Dogs for Emotional Support
Logan Airport has initiated a new pilot program introducing therapy dogs to assist stressed passengers. This initiative aims to create a more serene environment for travelers during potentially anxiety-inducing experiences.
Welcoming Therapy Dogs at Logan Airport
The program was announced during a press conference at Logan, where therapy dogs like Waffles, Buster, and Remmington gained significant attention. Waffles, a French bulldog, wore a “Pet Me” vest and quickly attracted the affection of travelers.
- Waffles: French bulldog, known for his friendly demeanor.
- Buster: White West Highland White Terrier, certified therapy dog from the Alliance of Therapy Dogs.
- Remmington: Giant Schnauzer, also trained to provide emotional support.
A Focus on Passenger Experience
During the announcement, Governor Maura Healey joined airport officials in promoting the program designed to enhance passenger comfort. Massport CEO Rich Davey emphasized the airport’s goal to improve overall customer satisfaction.
He noted, “We are aiming to be a top-five mega airport in the next three years.” Davey acknowledged the proven benefits of therapy dogs in reducing stress and anxiety.
The Role of Therapy Dogs
Therapy dogs have become increasingly common in various settings since their introduction to airports after 9/11. They serve to alleviate the anxiety that many passengers face during travel.
Carl Kaplan, a volunteer with Buster, described a therapy dog as “just a really well-trained dog.” These dogs are certified through a national program, ensuring they are equipped to assist in emotional support roles.
Volunteers Making an Impact
Both Kaplan and Waffles’ owner, Karen Oemler, volunteer their time to bring joy through their therapy dogs. Oemler visits schools and rehabilitation centers, emphasizing the unique comfort therapy dogs provide during difficult circumstances.
Therapy Dog | Breed | Role | Owner/Handler |
---|---|---|---|
Waffles | French Bulldog | Support for anxious travelers | Karen Oemler |
Buster | West Highland White Terrier | Support for travelers in various settings | Carl Kaplan |
Remmington | Giant Schnauzer | Support for travelers | Not specified |
As Logan embraces this new initiative, the presence of therapy dogs aims to not only ease tension but also enhance the overall traveling experience.
