Jon M. Chu Reveals New ‘Wicked 2’ Clip, Features Tin Man Without CGI

Director Jon M. Chu recently attended the BFI London Film Festival to present exclusive insights into his upcoming film, “Wicked: For Good.” The highly anticipated sequel to the popular musical adaptation will be released on November 21.

Exclusive Clip Features Reunion Between Elphaba and Glinda

During the festival, Chu revealed a new clip showcasing Elphaba, played by Cynthia Erivo, visiting Glinda, portrayed by Ariana Grande, on Glinda’s wedding day. This emotional scene occurs after the events of “Defying Gravity.” Glinda appears in a beautiful white gown, while Elphaba finds herself being pursued by the Wizard’s flying monkeys.

In a heartfelt moment, Glinda urges Elphaba to reconcile with the Wizard. However, their reunion is cut short as Elphaba disappears.

Innovative Visual Effects for Tin Man and Scarecrow

Although maintaining high excitement for the film, Chu emphasized his commitment to practical effects. He confirmed that the characters of the Tin Man and Scarecrow—previously known as Boq and Fiyero—were created using real makeup and physical effects rather than digital technology.

“Wait until you see the Tin Man and the Scarecrow,” said Chu. “These are extraordinary, physical creations, and there was no room for error.”

For Good: An Emotional Song Performance

The title song “For Good” plays a crucial role in the film. Chu praised the rendition by Erivo and Grande, describing it as “the most beautiful, emotional version I’ve ever heard.” He noted that their performance transcends traditional singing and resonates deeply with their characters’ emotions.

Initially, Chu filmed the song with sweeping camera shots but found the footage lacking intimacy. After seven months, he opted for a closer, more personal approach.

Shooting Locations and Anticipated Success

“Wicked” and “Wicked: For Good” have been filmed back-to-back, primarily at NBCUniversal’s Sky Studios Elstree in the U.K. The first film, released in late 2024, has already exceeded expectations at the box office, grossing over $750 million. It has earned accolades such as 10 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, and won awards for Best Costume Design and Best Production Design.

Future Projects on the Horizon

Looking ahead, Chu teased his next project: a film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.” This project will be produced for Amazon Studios and reunites him with “In the Heights” producer Scott Sanders. Chu expressed his enthusiasm for the show, acknowledging the challenges of adapting it while still conveying its distinctive tone.
