Steve Sarkisian: Texas Explores Shifting Cole Hutson to Left Guard

Texas football is navigating challenges with its offensive line, particularly at the left guard position. Following Hayden Conner’s departure to the NFL, the Longhorns have struggled to maintain effectiveness in this vital area.

Current Left Guard Situation

Connor Stroh has started in all five games for Texas this season. However, he was recently replaced during a game against Florida by Nick Brooks, a true freshman who stands 6-foot-7 and weighs 349 pounds. Junior Neto Umeozulu has also been utilized in this role.

  • Stroh has played 235 snaps.
  • Umeozulu has participated in 73 snaps.
  • Brooks has been on the field for 44 snaps.

All three players have received grades below 65.0 from Pro Football Focus, indicating a need for improvement. As a potential solution, Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian considered moving senior center Cole Hutson to left guard.

Potential Shift to Cole Hutson

During a recent press conference, Sarkisian confirmed that the team is indeed contemplating this shift. Hutson has experience in the guard position, having started 13 games as a right guard during his freshman year. However, that season he received a PFF grade of only 49.3.

As the backup center, Connor Robertson filled in for Hutson when he was injured earlier this season against San Houston. The team’s depth in the offensive line has raised questions about Umeozulu’s limited playing time. Despite entering fall camp as a leading candidate for the left guard position, Umeozulu has yet to secure a starting role.

Focus on Consistency

Sarkisian emphasized the need for consistency across all player positions. He stated, “We’re always looking for consistency, regardless of the position.” This includes understanding assignments, employing proper techniques, and adjusting as plays develop.

Upcoming Matchup

This Saturday, Texas, holding a record of 3-2 overall and 0-1 in conference play, will face No. 6 Oklahoma. The Sooners are undefeated at 5-0 and are known for their formidable defense, ranking fifth in the nation for rushing defense at 74.6 yards per game. Additionally, they boast an average of 4.2 sacks per game, positioning them among the best in college football.

As the Longhorns prepare for this critical matchup, adjustments to the offensive line may prove essential in their quest for improved consistency and performance on the field.
