UK Court Acquits Former Nigerian Oil Minister in Bribery Case

In a significant ruling, a UK court has acquitted former Nigerian Oil Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke of bribery charges. This decision comes after a lengthy legal battle that raised numerous questions about the integrity of the prosecution’s case.

Background of the Case

Diezani Alison-Madueke, who had been in the UK for nearly 11 years, faced serious allegations regarding her role in a bribery scheme. Her defense team, led by barrister Jonathan Laidlaw KC, highlighted several issues with the prosecution’s approach. They expressed concerns about why the Nigerian government did not pursue charges against Alison-Madueke during the prolonged investigation.

Defense Arguments and Issues with Prosecution

Laidlaw emphasized that Alison-Madueke had effectively been “kept prisoner” in the UK, unable to work or travel while investigations proceeded. He stated that the National Crime Agency (NCA) had failed to initiate extradition proceedings against six oil executives implicated in the case. The defense argued that the investigation had been fundamentally flawed as the NCA lacked access to crucial evidence from Alison-Madueke’s home in Abuja in 2015.

Compromised Investigation

  • The NCA relied heavily on evidence collected by Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
  • Despite urging the jury to trust the EFCC’s findings against Alison-Madueke, the prosecution dismissed the commission’s evidence regarding a co-defendant.

Olatimbo Ayinde, another executive in the oil industry, was also acquitted. Ayinde claimed she acted as an informant for Nigerian authorities, providing information to combat corruption. Her defense lawyer, Jonathan Lennon KC, argued that the circumstances surrounding her indictment were unjust, as she was cooperating with law enforcement.

Response from Alison-Madueke

Following the verdict, Alison-Madueke expressed relief, stating, “My nightmare is over.” In her statement, she reflected on the toll that the long legal process took on her life and family. Her remarks highlighted the emotional strain of living under the shadow of prosecution for over a decade.

This acquittal raises pertinent questions about the effectiveness of anti-corruption measures and the conduct of international investigations involving public officials. The outcome serves as a crucial reminder of the legal complexities involved in such high-profile cases.
