Coastal Flooding Threatens Boston Despite Beautiful Weather

Residents of Boston and surrounding coastal areas are facing a coastal flooding threat despite experiencing warm and clear weather conditions. The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a warning on Tuesday, stating that low-lying regions near shorelines and tidal waterways might experience significant inundation.
Coastal Flooding Forecast
According to the NWS, areas in Suffolk County, Barnstable County, Dukes County, and parts of Essex, Norfolk, and Plymouth counties are under a flood alert, which remains in effect until late Tuesday night. The warning indicates that some regions could see up to a foot of water on normally dry land.
Risk Areas
- Morrissey Boulevard in Dorchester is particularly vulnerable to flooding.
- North Shore locations, including Salem, Gloucester, and Newburyport, may experience similar conditions.
- Shallow flooding, less than a foot, is anticipated along coastal streets.
The NWS noted that rough surf is expected to lead to flooding on some coastal roads during high tide, which is forecasted to reach about two feet above average levels early Wednesday morning in Boston Harbor. While minor flooding is possible, most roads are expected to remain passable.
Upcoming Weather Changes
Following the pleasant weather on Tuesday, forecasters predict a shift towards more humid conditions beginning Thursday. Meteorologist Ken Mahan has indicated that muggy air will increase the likelihood of rain and thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening.
Weather Outlook
- Wednesday: Cooler, seasonal temperatures.
- Thursday: Potential for showers and thunderstorms.
- Friday: Clear skies and temperatures nearing 86 degrees.
As the week progresses, Boston residents should remain vigilant about coastal flooding while also preparing for a return of heat and humidity.
