Avanti Marks Significant Milestone in Class 805 Evero Fleet Development

Avanti West Coast’s Class 805 Evero fleet has recently achieved a remarkable milestone of five million miles on the West Coast Main Line. This significant accomplishment comes since the fleet entered service in June 2024, marking a pivotal point in the company’s operations.
Class 805 Evero Fleet Overview
The Class 805 Evero fleet includes 13 units, complemented by 10 electric Class 807 trains. This fleet was introduced to enhance service capacity and support Avanti’s decarbonization efforts, with a goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2031.
Operational Efficiency and Environmental Impact
- Trains switch between electric and diesel power at Crewe, enabling two-thirds of the route to run on electric traction.
- By April 2026, the fleet will produce nearly two-thirds less carbon per vehicle kilometer compared to previous Class 221 trains.
The majority of mileage was recorded on London to North Wales services, particularly to Holyhead. Notably, five million miles is equivalent to approximately 40 trips around the Earth.
Service Enhancements and Accessibility
The Evero fleet has also provided service along the London to West Midlands route. During engineering works in January and April this year, bi-mode operations facilitated Settle and Carlisle diversions, covering 59,620 miles.
- Additional weekday services on the London to Chester route began in September 2025, achieving an hourly frequency.
- Each five-car set of the Class 805 offers 16% more seating than the Class 221 models.
- Upgraded features include extra legroom, enhanced luggage space, and improved accessibility options such as Braille and large-print labels.
Leadership Insights
Owain Morgan, Senior Performance Manager at Avanti West Coast, emphasized the significance of reaching five million miles. He stated, “This achievement is a testament to the fleet’s performance and the dedication of our colleagues who ensure reliability every day.” He highlighted the introduction of the new intercity fleet as a substantial improvement in service quality and customer experience, particularly benefiting communities in North Wales.
