Benoit and Woll Traded to the Flyers

In a significant move, the Toronto Maple Leafs have traded goaltender Joseph Woll and defenseman Simon Benoit to the Philadelphia Flyers. In return, the Leafs acquire goaltender Samuel Ersson, defenseman Emil Andrae, and a third-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft.
Transaction Details
This trade marks the first for Toronto’s general manager, John Chayka, since taking over the position. Chayka highlighted the transaction’s benefits, stating, “What we like about this trade is the flexibility it provides. It fits into our plan by giving us a young defenseman, cap space, and a draft pick.”
Player Performance Stats
- Joseph Woll: Finished the last season with a record of 15-16-7, a save percentage of .899, and a goals-against average of 3.31. In the previous season, he had a record of 27-14-1, with a .909 save percentage and a 2.73 GAA.
- Simon Benoit: Recorded six assists over 73 games last season, averaging 17:18 minutes of ice time. He stands at 6 feet 4 inches and is in the final year of a three-year contract worth $4.05 million.
- Samuel Ersson: Posted a record of 14-11-5 last season with a save percentage of .870 and a GAA of 3.12.
- Emil Andrae: Contributed two goals and 13 points in 61 games for the Flyers in the 2025-2026 season.
Future Prospects
Woll, 27, is under contract through the 2027-2028 season with an average annual salary of $3.67 million. Upon joining the Flyers, he will pair with Dan Vladar, with whom the team is nearing a long-term contract extension.
Benoit, also 27, will become an unrestricted free agent in July 2027. His departure allows Toronto to free up over $5 million in salary cap space. This additional flexibility is crucial for Chayka, as he aims to make further adjustments to the roster.
Analysis of the Trade
This trade not only brings new talent to the Maple Leafs but also aligns with their strategic goals for cap management and player development. Chayka added, “Having cap space is an asset in the NHL, just like draft picks. Successful organizations need to keep this in mind, especially when looking for future changes.”
