Jurrien Timber Exits Netherlands’ Lineup; Neymar’s Recovery Boosts Brazil for World Cup 2026

Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber has been sidelined for the Netherlands’ World Cup 2026 campaign due to a groin injury. The Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) confirmed that Timber will be replaced by Lutsharel Geertruida.
Timber’s Injury Details
The injury has kept Timber out since mid-March. He made a limited return by appearing in the second half of the Champions League final on May 30. Timber came off the bench in the 66th minute of the match against Paris St-Germain, marking his first game since a victory over Everton on March 14.
Timber’s Fitness Status
Before the Champions League final, Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta stated that Timber was “fit” to play. However, the KNVB later indicated that the player “has not recovered sufficiently” to participate in the World Cup in a “medically responsible manner.”
Replacement and Upcoming Matches
Following discussions with the medical staff, the KNVB decided Timber would leave the national team’s pre-camp in New York after a friendly against Uzbekistan. Timber has earned 23 caps for the Netherlands since making his international debut in June 2021.
Geertruida Takes Timber’s Place
In response to Timber’s exit, 25-year-old Lutsharel Geertruida has been called up to the national team. Geertruida recently completed a loan season at Sunderland from RB Leipzig.
Group F Matches
The Netherlands will begin their World Cup 2026 journey against Japan on June 14. Following their opener, they will face Sweden and Tunisia in the group stage.
