Matthew Anderson Gains Valuable Experience at RBC Canadian Open

Matthew Anderson, a talented golfer from Mississauga, Ontario, is making waves at the RBC Canadian Open. With his deep familiarity with the TPC Toronto Osprey Valley course, he is currently three shots off the lead after two rounds of play.

Impressive Performance at RBC Canadian Open

At 26 years old, Anderson’s journey in golf began with a plastic club gifted by his grandmother at the age of two. His first experience on a regulation course was at four, and now he stands at a remarkable seven under par, shooting a 69 on Friday and finishing the day with a cumulative score of 133.

This marks Anderson’s fourth appearance at the RBC Canadian Open, where he has previously struggled. However, this year, he has shown significant improvement, easily making the cut in the 72-hole tournament. The event is being held at Osprey Valley in Caledon, Ontario, which features a par-70, 7,389-yard North Course.

Current Standings and Competition

As the tournament progresses, American Ben James leads with a score of 10-under-par. Notably, James is playing in his first tournament as a professional after earning his PGA Tour card. Five other players are close behind at nine-under, including last year’s runner-up, Sam Burns.

  • Ben James: 10-under-par
  • Group at nine-under: Sam Burns, Brooks Koepka, Ryan Fox, Tommy Fleetwood, Brice Garnett, Bud Cauley, Jimmy Stanger
  • Matthew Anderson and Taylor Pendrith: 7-under-par

Cutline and Notable Absentees

The cutoff to advance to the final two rounds was set at two-under-par. Several noteworthy players missed out, including:

  • Corey Conners
  • Mackenzie Hughes
  • Mike Weir
  • Justin Rose
  • Eric Zhao

Eric Zhao, an 18-year-old golfer from Toronto and a freshman at Princeton, finished at one-over, narrowly missing the cut due to double-bogeys on crucial holes.

A Glimpse Into the Future

This tournament is particularly significant for Anderson, as he strives for greater recognition on the PGA Tour. Although he plays primarily on the Korn Ferry circuit, he has not yet won an event there. His past accolades include being the Ontario men’s amateur champion in 2019 and a member of Team Canada.

Despite his limited experience on the PGA Tour, Anderson exudes confidence. He reflected on his performance, stating, “I play this course a ton and I practice here a lot. So I’m comfortable out here.” He also expressed gratitude for the support of his fans, who have shown up in numbers, even singing “O Canada” during the tournament.

As Anderson prepares for the final rounds, the excitement builds. The winner of the RBC Canadian Open will take home a substantial prize of US$1.764 million. The stage is set for an exhilarating finish to this prestigious event.
