KOSDAQ Declines, Ending Year in Negative Territory

The KOSDAQ market has seen a dramatic downturn, closing the year’s performance in negative territory. Once enjoying a growth exceeding 30%, the index faced a significant decline as of June 8, 2026.

KOSDAQ Performance Overview

At 2:29 p.m. on June 8, the KOSDAQ index was recorded at 925.93, down 7.63% from the previous day. The index started the year at 930 and peaked at 1,229.42 on April 27, achieving a growth rate of 32.86%. However, the recent trends have shifted it into negative territory.

KOSPI vs. KOSDAQ

  • The KOSPI index has shown resilience, maintaining nearly an 80% year-to-date growth despite a similar drop of nearly 7% on the same day.
  • The stark contrast between KOSDAQ and KOSPI performance highlights the challenges faced by the former.

Government Initiatives

In response to the downturn, the government has proposed several measures aimed at revitalizing the KOSDAQ market:

  • Delisting poorly performing companies.
  • Strengthening disclosure requirements for listed entities.
  • Introducing KOSDAQ active exchange-traded funds (ETFs).
  • Implementing a promotion and relegation system for companies on the index.

Despite these efforts, many market analysts consider them insufficient to recover the index’s declining performance.

Factors Contributing to KOSDAQ’s Decline

The poor performance of the KOSDAQ has been attributed to several key factors:

  • Investment concentration in major semiconductor stocks, particularly Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix.
  • A heavy weighting toward bio stocks in KOSDAQ, which are currently experiencing weak earnings.
  • A high market valuation relative to the KOSPI.

As interest in semiconductor stocks surged, many individual investors redirected funds away from KOSDAQ toward these more attractive options. Additionally, the recent uptick in interest rates has negatively impacted bio stocks, pivotal to the KOSDAQ’s composition.

Market Analysis

According to Lee Jaewon from Yuanta Securities, the ongoing rally in large-cap semiconductor stocks may exacerbate the KOSDAQ’s underperformance compared to KOSPI. The persistent weak earnings of KOSDAQ indicate a challenging outlook unless significant changes occur within the market structure.
