Fire Rages in Porto-Vecchio: Flames Consume Six Hectares

An intense fire is currently raging in Porto-Vecchio, consuming approximately six hectares of land. The blaze erupted on Saturday, June 13, in the Bala hamlet, located along the Muratello road.

Fire Response and Resources

Over fifty firefighters are actively working to combat the flames. They are supported by ten fire-fighting trucks, including a command vehicle. A helicopter capable of water bombing has also been dispatched from Ajaccio, conducting aerial operations to assist ground teams.

Challenges in Containing the Fire

The Departmental Operational Center for Fire and Rescue in Southern Corsica highlighted the challenges firefighters face. A portion of the fire is located in an area that is hard to reach with ground resources, compounded by strong winds.

Current Impact and Threats

  • Approximately 6 hectares of dry grass and dense scrub have burned.
  • At present, no buildings are directly threatened.
  • A livestock barn is being monitored due to potential risk from the fire’s progression.

Future Firefighting Measures

In response to the fire’s scale, aerial reinforcements are anticipated. Two Canadair planes based in Nîmes are expected to join the firefighting efforts shortly.

The situation remains dynamic, and emergency services are closely tracking developments as they work to contain the fire.
