Toronto Hosts Israel Solidarity Walk, Police Ensure Tight Security

The annual Walk with Israel took place in Toronto on Sunday, organized by the United Jewish Appeal (UJA) Federation of Greater Toronto. The event aims to show solidarity for Israel amid ongoing conflicts and tensions.

Event Details and Attendance

This year’s walk covered a distance of 3.9 kilometers, beginning at the Temple Sinai Congregation on Wilson Avenue and concluding at UJA’s Sherman Campus, which hosted a festival. Organizers anticipated a turnout similar to last year, when about 56,000 people participated.

Security Measures in Place

Toronto police ensured a robust security presence throughout the event. Chief Myron Demkiw announced that the police force would be “very significant,” with visible officers in various uniforms and equipped for safety. This measure is part of their commitment to ensuring a peaceful march without incidents.

  • Significant police presence: Officers on foot, bicycles, and horseback
  • Deployment of officers with helmets and long guns
  • Undercover police and hostile vehicle mitigation devices
  • Collaboration with York, Durham, Peel Regions, and Ontario Provincial Police

Deputy Chief Frank Barredo highlighted the emphasis on security, especially at Bathurst Street and Sheppard Avenue West, where past protests have occurred. The police strategy aims to maintain safety amid rising antisemitic incidents following the Hamas-led attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023.

Road Closures and Traffic Impact

To facilitate the walk, several road closures were implemented. These included:

  • Wilson Avenue and Avenue Road
  • West on Wilson Avenue to Bathurst Street
  • North on Bathurst Street to Ellerslie Avenue

These closures are expected to remain in effect until 4 p.m.

This marks the 57th consecutive year that the Walk with Israel has taken place in Toronto, underlining the community’s dedication to showing support for Israel during challenging times.
