Taylor Swift’s ‘Showgirl’ Cancels International Theater Release (Exclusive)

AMC Theatres Distribution and Taylor Swift’s team created excitement when they announced the project “Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party of a Showgirl” on September 19. Initially, the plan was to release the film in over 100 countries outside the United States. However, this international rollout has now been canceled, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

Cancelled International Release of ‘Showgirl’

The film was scheduled for a limited three-day screening from October 3 to 5 in North America and at least 18 international markets. These included Spain, Canada, Mexico, the U.K., Ireland, France, Germany, Switzerland, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. Additional territories were expected to be announced in October, but no updates were provided following the initial rollout.

Box Office Performance

Despite the international cancellation, ‘Showgirl’ achieved significant domestic success. It generated an impressive $34.1 million during its opening weekend, outperforming major films featuring stars like Dwayne Johnson and Leonardo DiCaprio. This cinematic experience is distinct from traditional concert films, as it serves as a promotional event for her new album, “The Life of a Showgirl,” which was released on October 3.

Key Statistics:

  • Domestic opening weekend gross: $34.1 million
  • Percentage of female viewers: 90%
  • Percentage of ticket buyers under 34 years: 74%
  • Largest demographic (18-24 years): 31%
  • Gross overseas: $16 million from 54 territories
  • Total worldwide gross: $50.1 million

The film drew substantial interest, particularly among Taylor Swift’s dedicated fanbase. ‘Showgirl’ is now the second-highest-grossing concert film or special music event in history, trailing only “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour,” which grossed over $180 million globally in 2023. Other artists’ album release parties typically see much lower earnings, sometimes not exceeding $1 million.

Reasons for Cancellation

AMC declined to provide specific reasons for the change in plans concerning the international release. Sources indicate that complications arose regarding film ratings and censorship rules in various territories. Furthermore, technical issues like subtitle availability may have contributed to the decision.

Team Swift is known for maintaining strict control over her projects. The collaboration with AMC has proven advantageous for both parties, especially given the swift success of ‘Showgirl.’ The domestic box office performance, achieved within just two weeks of the film’s announcement, is a testament to this notable partnership.

While the cancellation of the international release is disappointing for fans, the impressive earnings and unique format of this event have solidified its place in cinematic history.
