House Chief of Staff Arrested for Bringing Gun into US Capitol

The chief of staff to Texas Congressman Pete Sessions, Luis Angel Vega, has been charged with bringing a firearm into the U.S. Capitol complex. This incident occurred in December, and court documents reveal that Vega allegedly carried a pistol and ammunition through security without a proper license.

Details of the Incident

According to the court filings, Vega usually enters the Capitol building alongside Rep. Sessions, who is exempt from the standard security screening process. However, on this specific occasion, he entered separately from Sessions. Vega reportedly forgot that he had the pistol in his bag.

Security Checkpoint Discovery

  • Date of incident: December 22
  • Location: House office building within the Capitol complex
  • Charges against Vega:
    • Carrying a gun outside of his home without a license
    • Carrying a firearm onto Capitol grounds

During a phone interview with Capitol Police, Vega confirmed that he did not possess a license to carry the firearm. After security officials discovered the weapon, they instructed him to secure it in his vehicle and return to have his bag re-screened, which he complied with.

Legal Proceedings

Vega is scheduled to appear in DC Superior Court on Friday to face the charges. It remains unclear why more than a month elapsed before the arrest warrant was issued. As of now, a legal representative for Vega has not been identified, and inquiries to Rep. Sessions’ office have gone unanswered.

Implications of the Case

This incident raises questions about security protocols within the Capitol. It also highlights the responsibilities of individuals accompanying Congress members who are exempt from routine checks. The U.S. Capitol Police and the U.S. Attorney’s Office in D.C. have not commented on the ongoing investigation.
