Maclean Aims to Harness New England Patriots’ Legacy of Success

Scottish cyclist Maclean is set to compete for Team Scotland at the upcoming Commonwealth Games, taking place at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome this summer. At just 25 years old, Maclean’s journey has been both inspiring and challenging.

Maclean’s Dedication and Passion

A lifelong fan of the New England Patriots, Maclean had to prioritize his cycling career over watching his favorite NFL team in February’s Super Bowl. “I always said, if the Patriots ever get back to the Super Bowl, I’d go and see it,” he reflected. However, competing in the British National Track Championships meant he had to miss the event.

Despite this sacrifice, Maclean draws significant motivation from the Patriots’ legacy of success. He has successfully transitioned his focus from road cycling to track events and has qualified for his first Commonwealth Games, held in Glasgow, Scotland.

A Home Advantage

The Commonwealth Games represent a unique opportunity for Maclean, as it returns to Scotland for the second time in 12 years. “I’m absolutely buzzing,” he expressed. The support from friends and family is overwhelming, with many already purchasing tickets to attend.

Overcoming Challenges

Maclean’s path to the top has not been smooth. In 2021, he faced a life-altering challenge when he broke his back in a serious car accident. After being airlifted to a hospital, he dedicated months to recovery. His determination led him to win the Scottish Road Race Championships in 2024, marking a significant comeback.

Track Cycling Transition

Historically a road cyclist, Maclean decided to switch to track cycling only in October 2024, motivated by the announcement of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. This decision has quickly paid off, culminating in his selection for Team Scotland.

Future Aspirations

With the Commonwealth Games just weeks away, Maclean is focusing intensely on his training. “It’s the biggest race of my life in six weeks,” he stated. His commitment to his goals is evident, and he aims to achieve medal success.

Outside cycling, Maclean maintains interest in American football, particularly the Patriots. “I’ve been doing a lot of research to see who to draft for my fantasy team,” he said, emphasizing his connection to the sport.

As Team Scotland prepares for the Commonwealth Games, the entire nation will watch the athletes’ journey, especially Maclean, who represents both fierce dedication and the spirit of Scottish sports.
