Frontier Passenger Attacks Off-Duty Attendant, Attempts Exit and Cockpit Breach

In a troubling incident on a Frontier Airlines flight, a passenger attempted to breach both an emergency exit and the cockpit while injuring an off-duty attendant. The event unfolded on a flight from San Juan, Puerto Rico, to Chicago-O’Hare International Airport, prompting a diversion to Miami International Airport.
Incident Overview
On Sunday, a 51-year-old man, Juan Gabriel Reyes, allegedly became disruptive approximately 45 minutes after takeoff. He expressed a desire to exit the aircraft, attempting to open an emergency exit door.
Attempts to Breach Security
- Reyes aggressively shoved against the cockpit door.
- He attempted to urinate on the bathroom floor while being escorted back to his seat.
- After being moved due to his disruptive behavior, he choked an off-duty flight attendant who was nearby.
Several passengers, including Josh Longood, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instructor, intervened. They worked with on-duty flight attendants to subdue Reyes using flex cuffs and seatbelt extenders. Longood remarked that he felt prepared to handle the situation without injury occurring.
Legal Consequences
Following the diversion of the flight, which landed in Miami around 11:55 p.m., Reyes was arrested by the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office. He faces serious charges, including:
- Interference with flight crew members
- Assault within maritime and territorial jurisdiction
Reyes has not yet entered a plea and has been assigned a federal public defender. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recorded 687 reports of unruly passengers this year, highlighting a worrying trend in air travel safety.
Flight Information
After the incident, the Frontier flight continued its journey to Chicago later that night. This occurrence underscores the increasing concern regarding passenger behavior on flights, particularly incidents that threaten the safety of flight crew and fellow travelers.
