A350-1000ULR Sets Record for Longest Commercial Flight

Airbus is set to introduce the A350-1000ULR, the world’s longest-range passenger aircraft, designed specifically for Qantas Airways. This aircraft will enable non-stop flights from Sydney to London and New York, covering nearly 10,000 nautical miles with durations of up to 22 hours.
A350-1000ULR Specifications and Developments
The A350-1000ULR (MSN 707) recently completed its inaugural flight in Toulouse, a significant milestone for both Airbus and Qantas. The aircraft has undergone substantial modifications compared to the baseline A350-1000. A key feature is the addition of a Rear Centre Tank, raising fuel capacity by 20,000 liters, which extends its range by 1,000 nautical miles.
Comfort and Efficiency Enhancements
- Airspace cabin, optimized for ultra-long-haul missions.
- Powered by two Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-97 engines.
- Maximum take-off weight increase for improved performance.
- New galley air cooling system implementing lighter refrigeration units.
These upgrades not only improve operational efficiency but also ensure passenger comfort during long journeys. The A350-1000ULR has been designed to accommodate diversions while maintaining optimum performance.
Testing and Certification Process
Currently, MSN 707 is undergoing a two-month flight testing program. The focus is on certifying the structural modifications and fuel systems. Tests will include:
- Verification of fuel pumps, gauges, and pressure systems.
- Assessment of cabin temperature control and ventilation.
- Management of fuel transfers by the Fuel Quantity Management System.
Qantas and Project Sunrise
Qantas launched Project Sunrise in 2017, challenging aircraft manufacturers to enhance the capabilities of long-haul aircraft. The historical significance of this initiative pays homage to Qantas’s past, when it operated Catalina flying boats during World War II.
As part of this project, Qantas has ordered 12 A350-1000ULRs, positioning these aircraft as pivotal in breaking barriers in non-stop travel from Australia. The airline also has 12 additional standard A350-1000s planned for its long-haul network.
Interior Layout for Enhanced Passenger Experience
The A350-1000ULR’s design includes a spacious premium cabin layout with seating for 238 passengers:
- 6 First Class Suites
- 52 Business Suites
- 40 Premium Economy seats
- 140 Economy class seats
Passengers will also enjoy a wellbeing zone designed for stretching and moving around during lengthy flights. The first aircraft delivery to Qantas is anticipated in April 2027.
Future of the A350 Family
The A350-1000ULR is the latest addition to the A350 Family, joining the A350-900, A350-900ULR, and A350-1000. Collectively, these models are recognized for setting new benchmarks in long-haul air travel with significant reductions in fuel consumption and carbon emissions—up to 25%—while enhancing passenger comfort. Additionally, Airbus is developing the A350F freighter variant, which is expected to make its first flight later this year.
